Seem to be having problem with riding turns on my winches, Always put 2 wraps to start. Could it be that the winchdrums need resurfacing or sheets need replacing? Anyone have any experience with this?

Overrides

Someone recently said that stiff sheets will cause overrides so softer sheets may help with this. I have found two reasons for overrides, too many wraps on the winch (which doesn't seem likely here) or an excited crew member who "spins the drum" while tacking. Steady pressure instead of spinning the drum. Hope that helps!

Dry, stiff sheets

Bill-- I have had the problem occur because of dry, hard, stiff sheets. Try different sheets for a while--it may help. Randy

Stiff sheets

My sheets are pretty worn and soft, maybe they are just worn out? What is the slip situation in Stone Harbor Randy?

Across from Power Plant at Beesleys Point

The area is nice, but very tidal, I am restricted to about 2 hrs before and 2 hours after high tide. Sometimes less than that. A trip to the ocean requires a tide to tide run. Would like to find a new spot marina or even a private dock.

Across from Beesley's Point

Bill-- I know the spot--I've stopped by a couple times to look at some boats. It's a beautiful location, but I didn't realize it was so shallow. I've only come through there a couple of times by boat, headed up the Egg Harbor River on sightseeing daytrips. Both times we simply followed the channel to the river entrance. Randy

Great Egg River

Randy how did you come up to the river through ICW or from Ocean via OC Longport Bridge? How much do you draw, I have 4' fixed Keel

Up the River

Bill-- We came up via the ICW, but we were in a smaller boat at the time. I had a Newport 17 with an outboard and a swing keel. Draft was about 3.5 feet, but the keel could be lifted to reduce draft to about 18 inches. My Catalina 27's mast is too tall for the ICW between Avalon and Ocean City. Avalon Blvd, Sea Isle Blvd, and 34th Street all have fixed bridges with 35 feet of rated clearance. Given that my mast is 34 feet, it sits 4-5 feet above the waterline, and I have an antenna 2-3 feet above the top of the mast, I need at least 41 feet to clear any of those bridges. I might be able to get through one of them at dead low tide, but timing three of them that way would be impossible. I've never entered Ocean City's inlet. What is it like? Is it well marked? Randy

OC Inlet

The inlet does have channel markers, but like any other, it is rough, lots of fast big fishing boats plowing through with little regard for us little putting sailboats.
