I'm nearly finished with the refit of my Rhodes 19 and excited to be on the water soon, but have 2 (right now) details to address:

1. When I received the boat, the 2 covers for the forward storage (sail locker?) were just attached by some cable and hanging loose. What is the correct way to keep those covers on? I do not see any latches or other way to secure them. It's a 1977 model if it helps.

2. There is no drain plug right now. What plug was originally used? Looks like a rubber stopper would work, and I know I can glue in a garboard plug, but would like to know what was original.

I'm not really familiar with this boat. Where is the location of the drain that you want to plug?

The plug is just forward of the centerboard on the starboard side. Looks to be 3/4". The hull is about 1/2" thick give or take there at the hole.

I'm restoring a Rhodes 19 CB model as well. The drain plug is suppose to be a pipe thread. My R19 has the original drain plug with it. A friend of mine with a Keel R19 has the same threaded plug on his boat. I plan to replace mine with a longer piece of pipe/tubing that is easier to access. I also plan to add an electric bilge pump to my boat since the drain is under the floor boards.

As for attachment of the covers in the forward section above the flotation tank, from my understanding from talking to my friend (he has restored 4 R19's), they were originally held in place by elastic straps (bungee cord) attached to blocks up inside the forward compartment. When I first got my boat, I thought someone Had tried to install something up there. When I mentioned it to my friend, he said they were for the straps to hold the covers in place.

Thank you John, that helps a lot. I will just use some cords to attach those covers.

My drain looks like it was never threaded, but I will order a garboard drain and put it in.

My boat is mid 60's vintage. They may have stopped threading the drain hole at some point. I seems that a threaded drain plug might cause problems over time.

Thank you John. Seems like adding a garboard plug would be the best thing to do, although the rubber stoppers sure would be easy.
