I bought my boat in the winter of 2007. Previous owner had done a lot of work before getting a bigger boat and letting me have the 19. It's a keel model. The question I have concerns the chainplates. There is some slight buckling in the deck around the entry-point of the chainplates. I have not been able to find any information on the way the chainplate to rib attachment degrades. I know the ribs in the lower part of the hull have sometimes been an issue, but these were glassed and appear to be fine. As far as I can tell, no-one has touched the upper ribs/chainplates since the boat was built. So, question is, can someone direct me to information on how I can evaluate the condition of the chainplates and what experience someone might have in improving/repairing them. I'm wondering if bolting them directly through the hull might be an option. Thanks for any and all help! Pete

Rhodes chain plates
One of my friends had an O'Day Rhodes centerboard sloop and to tell you the truth, I don't remember how the chain plates were configured. It would probably be worth your while to call Rudy Nickerson of D&R Marine in Assonet Ma. He knows the O'Day boats better than anyone I know. He worked for O'Day at one time and later bought out all there sailboat parts plus all the molds when the Fall River Ma. company went out of business. Also, China is a long way from here, but I just recently found out that the O'Day Sailboats are presently being built by a fellow in Japan. Google "O'Day Sailboats, Japan" and you'll find it. I don't think that they build the Rhodes 19. If I should come across any info on plans, I'll let you know. Joe

I've found that in spite of the fact that the O'Days were great boats, they did have certain bugs that needed to be addressed and rudders were one of them. During certain years, they built some models with keel and chain plate problems, but these bugs can be corrected. They're still a great boat as far as I'm concerned. Good luck! Joe
