Revenge of the cockpit drains

Further to the recent discussions in April about cockpit drain hoses I have two questions I would like some help on: 1 At present the starboard cockpit drain hose crosses over the the port side and then goes out through the hull on the starboard side. Vice versa port. Is it really necessary to route the hose across and back or would I get away with just crossing from starboard drain to port through hull (and vice versa)? 2 Per Shields Marine Hose, recommemded hoses are series 262 corrugated exhaust hose or series 252 or 257 reinforced exhaust hose. All are chosen for below water service and flexibility. Does anyone have any other recommendation? P.S. I know this is not actually an under water service, but as advised in the previous posts it needs to be treated as such. Thanks, John Brecher

How indeed?

That picture is way too familiar. I believe the right answer is a new boat with a walk-through transom. Problem is I love my H37C and have way too much invested. Not only is there the hose routing issue but the hoses are too small. And the scuppers are way too small. And there should be bronze valves on bronze thru-hulls. I wish I knew the answer. I think Gene Gruender had something on the subject( http://www.geocities.com/TheTropics/Cabana/7414/upgrades.html ). Right now I have a piece of sanitation hose replacing one that separated at that smooth piece. I cut it short and went directly from starboard scupper to starboard outlet.

Tested drain hose arrangement

Further to my previous posts, I went out on San Francisco Bay on Saturday and tried out the cockpit drain with no loop, just crossed from one side to the other. I had no problems heeled over and pounding through some ferry boat wakes etc. It was only after I had taken down the main and was sailing level, downwind on jib alone back to the marina, that I could see bubbles popping up out of the drain, but no solid water. Based on this I am going to stick with the drain lines just crossing and not looped across and back. The shorter lengths drain much better. John Brecher
