The 8 HP Diesel Renault transmission on our 1980 27' Hunter finally kicked the bucket. We're told it needs a clutch cone and thrust washer/gaskets. Good luck on us finding that, as the rarity of parts is the challenge, and the price reflects that!!

Our next step...in order to enjoy our Hunter without breaking the bank, is to retrofit the old Renault Inboard with a new Outboard. Has anyone had experience doing this, and what motor would you recommend for delta and possible SF Bay sailing?

A heads up...Looks like we may have to part out the Renault if we are not able to find a reasonable clutch cone/thrust washer.:doh:The engine itself is a great running engine!

In the relatively flat water of the delta we found a 10 H.P. Honda exceeded what was needed for our 23 foot Clipper Marine. We sailed out of Bethel Island from 1987 to 2000.

When we tried to go to the bay the waves in the Sacramento around the mothball fleet were like a brick wall, we tried 3 days in a row and then gave up.

Outboards have many advantages, cost, ease of repair, no drag when up, etc. If you are going to use a bracket on the transom get a good one with plenty of travel and an easy lift.

Thank you for your experiences. We will certainly consider that. We plan to venture out into the bay eventually, but want to make sure what we replace the inboard with will suffice. Thank you once again.
