I would like to move my main sheet controls from the end of the boom, '76 27, to mid boom ala early '80s. Three blocks to the boom and fiddle block to the deck [cabin top roof]. a] has anyone ever done this? b] any problems-concerns? c] how do early 80 owners like this system? d] do the lines interfere with cabin entry? e] where is the best place or way to cleat the sheet?

Think before you do

The 27 footers, in the eighties used 3 blocks attached to the boom amidship, w/ 3 bails,it also has 2 dbl sheave blocksd springlaoded, on ea. side of the companionway, but the sys. also needed a 4 to 1 boom vang to keep the boom from riasing, which it didn't supply, so if you use this system you'll need a boom vang too, I suggest to buy a traveler sys, w/ car and install it fwd, parallel and in line with your companionway slider, so it will not interfere with companionway access, you'll also will need riser blocks 3" to 4" high, due to contour of cabin, on ea side of the companionway there's an alum. plate between cabin & liner to drill and tap for bolts, you'll also will need 2 or 3 bails and blocks, you may save some money using and up grading your old traveler, good luck.

Use Traveler

Have a 1980 and the factory rig is poor for close into the wind. Will not center the boom adequately. I am in the process of using a raised traveler that takes the place of the spring loaded blocks on the 1980. A friend made a raised travel for his 1977 and it is "OK" He needs a better system but the concept worked. He used 3 x 6 inch aluminum plates attached to the cabin roof. I would want to go into something more substantial or bolt through the roof and a backing plate. It is all workable but I'll let you know. Just waiting for the traveler car that is backordered.
