retiring but not removing the holding tank

Probably the most difficult aspect of dealing with my holding tank problem (it leaks) is that fact that it's glassed in under the shower seat and behind the starboard vberth bulkhead. After speaking with another 37 cutter owner, he suggested not dealing with tank removal, just bypass the tank, fill with foam and intall the new tank below the vberth. My question is this- is there anything I should do to treat the tank for odor before sealing it with foam- is there anything wrong with this whole approach?

Bleach the heck out of it

Fill it with a few gallons of bleach and fresh water a few times and the odor should be cured. Why not use a saber saw and cut it up to remove it then use the space gained for storage? Good luck. Dave

Bleach won't do any good, but

David's other idea--do whatever you have to do to get it out and convert the space to storage--MAY be a good one. The v-berth is definitely a better place for a holding tank in most cases, but it depends on low long the hose from the head has to be.
