Has anyone had success restoring a faded blue bootstripe, short of repainting? Thanks.

Bootstripe

Assuming the boat is out of he water, painting the bootstripe would be much easier than rubbing, buffing, and waxing. The end result would be much better also. Clean, wet sand, tape and paint. It's easy!

Bootstripe

II had a Hunter 37.5 and the bootstripe was faded and I inquired about painting it. the yard manager suggested restoring the stripe and I found it very easy to get great results. I wet sanded the bootstripe with 500 grit and then used a rubbing compound followed by wax. It looked great!

boot stripe tape?

How about boot stripe tape. It lasts a long time and is easy to apply. Any ideas?

I agree with jimg. It's a pretty east thing to do when you do the bottom. Did mine last year. I did raise mine up a couple of inches, as I seem to have a tendency to overload the boat a little, or more, and the origional would ocassionally be in or under the water.

If the condition of the stripe is good, not all hacked up and scratched, just dull, then restoring it is much easier than painting it. Wet sanding with 800 grit wet or dry sandpaper followed by a light compounding and a buff out, then wax should give you very good results. You could also try using one of the polymer coatings like Newglass2, Vertglas etc. which would also be easier than painting. I'd consider painting only when you can't restore the stripe to a decent finish anymore. Good luck

What Boat?

My old h34 had a ton of gelcoat on it and i regualarly used #400 and #600 sandpaper on all the stripes to restore them and never got through the gelcoat

Advise from someone who used almost all of the acrylic gelcoat restorations systems: Poliglow is the best (Vertglas will yellow)

bootstripe redux

I hate to repeat myself, but you could sand, mask, and paint two coats of Brightside on a 30' boat with about an hour's total labor time, and very little elbow grease. It will be brighter and shinier and less overall hassle than all the buffing, poliglow, etc. By the way, the Bootstripe tape really does work very well, but your boat may not have a stripe that is a constant width from bow to stern, like the tape does. If the tape is useable, though, I would recommend it over everything. I have used it, and it lasted for years.

Painting bootstripe

I repainted my bootstripe last year, and while some folks may be able to do it in an hour, it took me several days - sanding between coats to eliminate any runs or brushstrokes that were left behind. Since I was doing it in spring and the weather was not settled yet, each day the conditions were different, and I found it difficult to get the paint the same consistency each time. I would guess I spent 4 to 6 hours total on mine, over the course of a few days. I will try buffing the new boat before painting again - but I wanted to change the color of the stripes on the last boat. Scott Fuller Milwaukee, WI

Tape

If you are sanding and buffing to restore the stipe, it pays to take the time to mask off the boot stripe from the hull. I have a blue stipe on a white hull and the first time I buffed & waxed the stripe I had a devil of a time getting the blue off the white. This happened even though I had just rubbed out and waxed the rest of the hull first.
