Hello,Does anyone have a source for clear images of the drawings found in the Vega Handbook? I am well into the restoration of hull 709 and could use all the info I can get on the boats original condition in regards to wiring of the boat and the original Albin engine. ThanksMark C

Hi Manning

I am afraid it is not quite as simple as you say
with reference to the Series 1, 2 & 3

Series 1 Vegas were originally fitted with an Albin
021/022 Petrol engine. The exhaust outlet is also in the centre of the transom.
There is a compass glass fitted in the centre of the companionway. The cockpit
coaming is narrow and the cockpit lockers have an overlap as does the mainsheet
traveller. There are small differences internally. The fuel tank is a copper
cylinder located in the starboard locker. Vega V0002 - V1399 (There are some
Series 1 fitted out as Series 2 around V1400)

Series 2 Vegas were fitted with the Volvo MD6A/6B
Diesel. The coaming is still narrow but there is no overlap or compass in the
companionway. The fuel tank is polyamide and fitted in the keel, later Series 2
Vegas had the fuel tank changed to stainless steel and located i the Port
Locker. The exhaust outlet is located in the starboard side of the transom. The
engine bearers are much higher than the Series 1 and on a few are different
heights giving an angled installation. Small differences internally that
underwent changes throughout the production. Vega V1400 - V3050

Series 3 Vegas were fitted with the Volvo MD7A
Diesel with combi.. Exhaust outlet fitted to the starboard part of the transom.
Cockpit coaming much wider and the non-slip areas much rougher. Small internal
differences. Fuel tank stainless steel and located in the Port Locker. V3051 -
V3450

All these numbers are not exact and some Vegas in
the USA had later numbers whilst still being a different Series. Easy
differences are:

Narrow Cockpit Coaming = Series 1 or 2
Wide Coaming = Series 3
Fine ant-slip area = Series 1 or 2
Rough anti-slip = Series 3
Exhaust Outlet centre of transom = Series
1 Exhaust outlet starboard of transom = Series 2 or 3
Original Albin 021/022 Petrol Engine = Series
1 Original Volvo MD6A/B = Series 2 Original Volvo
MD7A = Series 3

All fitted with Combi Gearbox. Series 1 Combi
has different parts to Series 2 & 3

Hope this helps

Hi
Mark,
This is the way
understand the series system Vega users to identify the boats. There were 3500
Vegas built. You will not find a Vega with a hull number greater than 3500. My
Vega "VIKING" is hull number 3361. Clearly a series 3. They simply took the
number 3500 divided by 3 = 1667. So series one is hul l number 1 to 1667, series
2 is 1668 to 2834 and series 3 is 2835 to 3500. There are some layout
differences between the series's. One I am aware of is your fuel tank is located
in a pocket above the keel. On my boat a 9 gal fuel tank was installed in the
port side cockpit locker. removing the diesel tank for the interior of the
cabin. I just have a rather large void space above the keel. There was a rather
detailed blog going on here on the Vega site about a month or two ago. also see

Hi Manning

I have had a vega for the last 20 plus years. I can
afford a bigger boat but I love my Vega. Easy to work on, easy to sail and a
really friendly owners association throughout the world. Sailing is not about
making money, it's about enjoying your hobby, past-time or purpose in
life! Dont think of it as monetary profit, think of it as pleasure
profit.

Thank you to all who straitened me out on
this issue of Series numbers on our Vegas. I think it is very interesting. Now I
have a question for my Vega owner friends. Do you feel that owning a
Albin Vega sailboat has a cult following? What would you say is the main reason
that we all love our Vega's so much? I am trying to figure out why I have been
so crazy, sometimes to the point of embarrassment. That I have spent so much
money and time restoring a very old boat that really is not very attractive and
Ill never see any financial return on the investment?

Albin couldn't know when they were building Series One Vegas how many they would ultimately sell so I don't go for the one third theory.I think the Series One numbers go upto around 1400 but Steve Birch could probably give a more accurate figure.Mike On Saturday, 10 October 2015, 16:26, "walt judy brown allore bestvega@... Hi Manning! When I was in high school, even though I lived in the US Midwest, I dreamed of going sailing one day. I purchased the book, Tinkerbell, and gave an oral book report on it. Of course, my classmates thought I was a real dork! Luckily I met my like-minded husband, Paul, in college. Almost 50 years have gone by and Paul and I still own V1826 which we purchased in 1984 and have cruised extensively. We are now officially retired and hope to go on some long cruises once again, beginning next summer!

Well said, Mel. It's something about the midwest. I read somewhere that more men joined the Navy from the midwest than any other section of the country.

bilge blower for the fan, dorade style mushroom vent. The original Vega mushroom vent on the stern is a simpler version of the one in the heads that takes a 4" hose rather than the locking knob. Some mushroom vents are closeable by rotating from the outside.Alisdair V752

Here's another question that needs to be answered. What is the best system to vent the engine compartment exhaust fan through the hull? Specifically the device mounted on top of the hull that lets the exhaust air out but keeps water from getting in. It came with a UFO style ventilator that didn't make much sense because closing it required disconnecting the exhaust hose and turning the knob from below. The same goes for the head exhaust. I would prefer a wired exhaust fan rather than solar fan. The closeable UFO style vents all have knobs the hang down and get covered up or are in the way when you try to mount something under then. Thanks, Mark

The original venting system works well I would not change it. The
present system ventilates even when you are not aboard and the
electricity is off . There should be no exhaust air in the boat, If
there is, that is extremely dangerous. As there must be an exhaust
leak in the engine exhaust. A good friend of mine killed his
girlfriend with an exhaust leak. I think the ventilation system on
the Vega to be the best I have ever used on a boat. I would give
any changes serious consideration. If you have the Albin Gasoline
engine then of course it needs a blower vent to prevent gas fumes
from accumulating in the bilge. Safty from explosion should be the
goal as Gas fumes are heavy and will drop into the keel. An electric
builge pump can ignite them. I never close my ventilation system
even when I leave the boat for weeks.. I would put he ventalation
system just as it was. Doug

I still haven't removed the plastic packing peanuts that a previous owner put in the mast to silence the slapping. As I understand it the mast "stack" is part of the ventilation. Please correct me if I'm wrong.
