Resealing my opening ports

Am beginning the job of resealing the opening ports on my H34. Most of the old sealing compound peels off or can be scraped, but there is always some residue that I just cannot completely clean on either the plastic frames or the fiberglass. Is there a solvent that works on this stuff? Am not sure what the original bedding was, but assume a silicone or silicone/polyurethane sealant.By the way, Beckson recommends 100% silicone for this. Removing sealant

I purchased a product GOOF OFF from Home Depot. Works great for sealant, glue, etc.

Bruce: Bill is absolutely right. I did the opening ports on my '85 H31 last spring and used Goof Off, a good scraper, and a bit of elbow grease. Worked like a charm. Really not a difficult job to my surprise! Good luck.Tim (S/V "TIDE")

About to ...

I'm about to tackle the same project. I have a general question ... how do these things fit together. On my boat, the screws are in the inside of the window facin out. Since there is no visible evidence that the screws make it out to the trim ring, I assume the screws go into the hull liner. What holds the trim ring on? Just sealer?Any further advice about this job?Thanks, Gary

recently did it.

I recently ripped out 2 old ports and put new ones in. Dunno if I used the right stuff, but I used 4200 on the outside ring and it's working fine. The old ones are just like the new ones. You've got screws that go into the skin of the boat from the inside, and adhesive is the only thing holdling that outer ring on. The guy who sold it to me (factory seconds from bowmar or lewmar or whatever) said use 4200. Good results so far. I plan to rebed an old one and use the same stuff. Hope that helps, Matt
