Rerigging a 1984 31

I have my 31 hunter out of the water and the mast is down, I am going to send all of my standing rigging to the company that made the rigging for the boat to be replaced exactly. My question is What do I need to know about rerigging the boat? Is this something that I should hire out (at great expence). Looks to me to be pretty straightforward and I should be able to do it with some freinds help. As far as tuning I am going to try this myself also. I am pretty mechanical but have a fear of the unknown.

Not Rocket Science!!

You can do the entire job yourself! When I did my rigging three years ago I bought the wire with the upper end fittinge saged on and I put the Sta-Lok fittings on the bottom. Thr bottoms are the ones subject to the greatest corrosion, and get filled with 5200 during assembly. ther're better than the swage on fittings and will last a million years or so. Or certainly longer than you'll own the boat. I just laid the new wires alongside the old ones, adjusted as needed, cut and assembled. I got a great job cheap (One of my favorite things!) and have ultimate confidence in my rig. As I recall, doing it that way, buying from JSI at a show I spent about $100 per wire, but I don't really trust my memory on that one. Wharever the case, it's certainly cheaper and more satisfying than farming the job out.

Sam, why did you use 5200?

Sam: The Sta-Lok system is suppose to be reusable. If you use 5200 are you going ot be able to get the unit apart if you need to rework or replace. I agree that this is NOT rocket science but probably a little more difficult on the B

Rigging

I agree -- it's not rocket science. It's just a matter of cutting wire and attaching the fittings. I agree with Steve on the 5200 -- Sam turned his reusable Sta-Loks into permanent fixtures on those wires. Even if he's ever able to get them apart again, I can't think of any way he'd be able to clean them out enough to reuse them. The only reason to put anything in the fittings at all is to keep the water out. It is NOT needed as an adhesive. The only adhesive that's used is a little red or blue Loctite on the threads so that vibration doesn't loosen things up.

re rigging

I changed all the standing rigging when I bought my H-31(1984 model) in 1996. I had a fitting break on the sea trial, so I felt ALL was suspect. I had it done by a rigger, and agree that sizing the stays is not rocket science, BUT tuning a B

Jeff is correct.

Jeff: This is really not for the faint of heart and a project for a non-experienced B
