In Maryland, are there and restictions or guidelines on the hailing port lettering for a vessel that has a state licence number? I'm guessing there are none because we bought the boat last year with no hailing port on it, but thought I should ask.

Thanks.

No. Only required for documented vessels.

Maryland does require that you pay their sails tax even if you did not purchase the boat in maryland. So when you move there you have tax just because you own a boat. Now if the boat hails from say VA ........

If a new to you boat is purchased and moved to a different state, then sales tax is paid to the new state. If you have owned the boat for a long time it seems unlikely that any sales tax would be due.

... when a boat is moved to a 'new' state, the 'new' state requires you pay the *difference* between what you originally paid and sales tax at the current sales tax rate for that 'new' state.

Eg.:
If you paid no sales tax, then you owe the entire amount to the 'new' state at their current rate.
If the original state had/has higher sales tax than the 'new' state you pay nothing to the 'new' state.

The same applies to autos, trucks, aircraft, etc.

Like all documents from 'government', KEEP your tax records !!!!!!!

Wait! Wait! I know! I'd get to pay personal property tax every year in addition to licensing fees on my boat AND on my car.

Gotta love Virginia...
My Michigan sales tax on a new car is 6%, I pay as much per year for plates as Virginia charges for 3 years ,and I don't pay sales tax on grocery items.and no personal property tax on my car.

The personal property tax is about a wash compared to the sales tax after about 3 years. And gasoline is cheaper in Virginia.

Cheer up, they get us one way or another...

I believe the sales tax on pleasure boats in Virginia is capped at $2000.00. And property tax on watercraft in Hampton Virginia is almost nothing ($.000001 per $100.00).

The reason gas is cheaper in Virginia is because they eliminated their state gas tax and replaced it with a 4% titling tax and raised the sales tax to 5.3%. Pretty good deal for a drive-through. If your residence is in Virginia you pay, every year, whatever your municipality declares the personal property tax to be, based on book value. Which in the case of a large sailing vessel is ridunculus.

Not in Hampton it not. Virtually no personal property tax on boats there. The key is, you have to have it there most of the year. This year, I paid taxes to westmoreland county and the boat was never there. That's where I was last year and I was too lazy to change it. I was in Hampton this year and will likely keep her there next year. I like the bay sailing way over the Potomac. The down side is my slip costs a lot more.

I thought you only needed to be in Hampton on January 1st?
