I have a 2 blade max prop and a PSS dripless shaft seal installed on my H 35.5. Last year I had the prop apart to re-pitch it and regreased it. What is the required annual maintenance for the prop and dripless shaft seal. Thanks

Don't know about the seal...

But Max-Prop suggests an annual grease job by a pro. Check out the website for details. I was going to skip it this year but then I pondered the RPMs and figured it was better to be safe than stranded.

You can do the maintainance yourself

I have a 3 blade Max prop and when I haul for painting I clean the outside of the prop and use the grease gun (zerk fittings) until grease is forced from the body of the prop. Even during the year if I have the zincs replaced by a diver, they will sometimes re-grease the prop under water. Be sure to use the recommended grease for this job.

pss shaft seal maintance

Don, there is bacicly no maintance required for a pss shaft seal per say. Other then peridicaly checking the seal for condition and after relauching you will need to "burp" the bellows.(just pull back on the bellow until water sprays out be careful you will get wet)This release any air theat may have been traped from relaunch.Make a habit of checking the seal for condition.

Required items

Hello Don, Thanks for your note. For the Max-Prop you will want to re-grease each year and replace the tip zinc, if yours is equipped with one. If you experience any electrolytic scaring you will want that fixed as soon as possible. The PSS will need to be burped each time the vessel is pulled from the water and set back in. If the water drains from the tube and air replaces it an air pocket can form which could allow the seal to run dry creating heat and possible scoring to the carbon surface. The instruction manual at www.pyiinc.com talks about it. As with any hose clamp on board you will want to tighten or replace as needed. Hope this helps. Kevin
