I need to have my engine rebuilt on my Catalina 30 (low oil preassure) They are going to start next week .... any advice from anyone that has done this in the past. Thank you.

Cost to rebuild ,check out this site on electric motors and read about the guy that rebulit his engine and then had to do it again because they did some thing wrong. With the cost of fuel going out of site this seems like the right thing to do now. Happy Sailing

low oil pressure
low oil pressure does not mandate a rebuild or replacement. have you or anyone checked the oil pressure directly on the engine and gotten a accurate reading? how low is it?how old is the engine and hours?even with low pressure it could run a long time with no problems and maybe put off a rebuild/replacement for years. just some thoughts

another thougth about oil pressure is what weigth oil and is it diesel rated? if you have a diesel or is it a gas engine? when was the oil changed last ?

Know what you are getting
2 years ago went through this with local marine facility. The $2000 estimate for a top overhaul and new pumps turned into a $6,500 top overhaul with some things still not done. After negotiations I still could have bought a new Vetus with transmission for the same price as my partial overhaul. Unless your mechanic is willing to give you a firm price in writing and notify you with the full price of any additional repairs (and there will be), I'd opt for a new engine. You tend to just getting deeper into the old engine if it has a lot of hours on it as mine does.

rebuild shop, cutting the cost even further. If you don't do your own work, it's hard to justify the cost of on site or shop labor, when it is, by nature, not as efficient as an assembly line. Engine is 25xp Universal The oil preassure was check and it read 12 gauge preassure beginning, to 2 after 15 minutes of running time. Normally preassure is 30 if I am not mistaken. The other option I found out today is to purchase the engine block new, which comes with fuel injectors, 50 amp alternator and the rest of the parts can be transfer from the old engine, it comes to about half the prize from a new one.
