My 1979 MD17C engine has a "Noise" and two different mechanics, one a long time Volvo dealer, suggest removing it, tearing it down and resolving the problem. If I am to spend that much on labor, I thought I should look at repowering the boat.

Has anybody done this with good or bad results? What engine did you choose, etc?

I plan to resolve the problem one way or the other and moor her in the Exumas for frequent visits. She has refrig, freezer, AC, generator and many other upgrades. I would also sell one half of the boat to the right party.

Thanks in advance for your suggestions.

It is easier to replace your engine if you can use the same mounting beds, however, based on experience with my 9.2a I can tell you that engine mounts were not S2's forte. Mine are only weakly tabbed to the hull and the tabs broke loose in the back and had to be re-secured. Now my engine is a 2QM15, which might shake about a good deal more that the engine in your boat, but the MD17C is probably a 2 cylinder also, so perhaps not. If your mounts are merely 4 x 4's resting on epoxy putty with 3-4 tabs visible holding them down, I strongly recommend you plan to address the mounts if you repower.

If you use the same mounts some manufacturers may make an engine compatible with the existing configuration. A number of manufacturer's are essentially marinizing kubota diesels. This may include vetus, beta, westerbeke and universal. The point is, many manufactuer's are using the same base, so be aware when you shop around.

http://www.betamarinenw.com/Applications/Replacementengines.html lists that they have an engine that has been used to replace the MD17C.

From what I can tell, there will be little parts availability in the Exumas, so you may wish to select a replacement based upon what your local mechanics typically support / install. It sounds like you plan to pay for installation and it will likely be cheaper to let them work with something familiar. Be sure to do your homework online. It always pays to have as much knowledge as possible, especially when tackling a major project. From a value added perspective, I'd probably go for a small 3 cylinder were I replacing my 2QM15, as it would run smoother and be a plus were I to sell her. Good luck. Bob
