Just finished installing/aligning a 1986 volvo 2000 series 18hp diesel in my 78 h30.Just put this on here in case anyone was interested cause it took me some thinking to figure it out.The volvo has an angled drive compared to the straight drive yanmar 12hp I replaced. To anyone attempting something similar I cut two wedges of oak 3 1/4 inches on one end to nothing in 30 inches 3 1/2 inches wide I ended up cutting off some on the small end and having the wedges about 3 inches forward of the rear of the engine bilge. The result was a beautiful alignment and a nice fit.

That should be a nice improvement. Is the Volvo smaller and lighter? Any pictures? I love the simplicity of diesels, especially when it comes to wiring. After a misspent youth with hot rods give me a diesel to work on.

Well Ed,I had a venerable but trustworthy 12 hp ysb that was bullet proof but as I sail where we have a 23 foot tidal range and there are areas of strong current I wanted something that would get me there so to speak not to mention that the engine was getting on in years the mounts were shot, one was actually sheared off the other three were were loose and rusty.Of all I could gather 18 to 20 hp was a good size for my boat so I decided I would not go below 18 and when one with low hours became available I grabbed it.The motor has a much smaller footprint than the 12 and still ample space above the head as the 30 has a deep engine bay (top to bottom)The kicker for me was the angle drive took some thinking but once it came to me I figured it out in about 5 minutes.I will get some pics she looks good in there cant wait to test her out in the water new shaft and a 3 bladed prop as well new cutless strut rewelled it was cracked and rebedded stern tube new exhaust...you know the drill im sure.

Sounds like you did everthing right. Knowing that the engine, drive train, and the main hole in the boat are solid will provide real peace of mind.
