My Hunter 27 is powered by a Yanmar 8HP diesel inboard. Has anyone ever upgraded this boat to a larger HP diesel? If so what brand and what HP? Also the forward v-berth hatch needs replacing what brand fits and what size? Thanks for any help Glen McQuigg

repower

Hi Glen: I have an older h27 also. It had been upgraded to 2GM20 by previous owner. It's a very clean job, plenty of access to filters, water pump amd belts. Engine cover fits well. Gives plenty of power when needed. Couldn't suggest a better changeout. Good luck red

Check photo archives for instructions on how to replace forward hatch and what to use.

Answer to both

First....the best place Found to get replacement hatches for the older model Hunters is a guy who sells the original Grey enterprises hatches and ports. Go to Thriftymariner.com. Real cheap compared to anywhere else. I ordered all new ports from him and they are the exact same as the ones I removed. The prices are almost half anywhere else. Second....A 10 HP Westerbeak is a great upgrade especially because it came with many H27. My 81 came factory direct with it and I have never had any problems. It fits just right. Good Luck...

Funny you ask...

...because I was thinking along the same lines... For what I see on the drawings for both engines specs, there is plenty room under the cover for the 2GM being it just about 3.8" longer, 3.4" higher and just .4" wider overall. The differences on the other critical dimensions are also very small and quite easy to adapt (engine mount bracket and base come to mind). What I am no sure is were you can get one of those engines and,if that is the case, hope the darn thing don't cost as much as the boat. Any body with that info?

John, can you elarge a bit on your experience with Thriftymariner? I have tried to buy some standard Gray Ports from these folks and they have not sent them, will not return calls nor even pick up the telephone. I can not from my experience recommend them.

I bought all new ports from these guys for my H31. They were very prompt to respond, help me confirm the sizes and shipped them right away. I was very satisfied. Can't imagine what the problem is with your order, mayber internal snafu or something?

just did it!

Just last season replace old yanmar with brand new Yanmar 1Gm. The new one doesn't smoke, but I guess because of design I find the new engine very noisy and shakes alot at low speed. for that reason alone maybe 2 Gm or westebreke might be better. The whole job ran about $5000 (minus $1100 for old engine) I don't know if another $2000 for a 2gm would be worth it! If you can good used 2Gm go for it.

Yanmar engine source?

John: Where you got the engine? Seem to me if you paid 5000 for one 1GM, a 2GM will cost me more that the boat! Yanmar have a chain of sales outfits (Area representative, distributor, dealerships, etc)which make the final product very expensive. One cylinder jobs all shake at low rpm's and this diesel with such a small flyweel want over 1000 rpm at least to start running smooth. If you know of a used 2GM, please let me know. Fixing them is no problem...
