Repower & Rudder Replacement

I have just purchased a 1977 Cat-30 which needs, among other things, a new engine & rudder repairs. I have 2 questions: With respect to the rudder would I be better off buying a new one from Catalina (or elsewhere) or repairing the one I have? I've been told that the older ones were made better. With respect to the engine, I'm replacing an Atomic 4 with a Yanmar 2GM20F. While I have the engine out, is there any maintenance I should perform? Does anyone have a prop that they could recommend for this boat/motor combination?

rudders

There have been two or three rudder upgrades to the catalina 30 so you might want to go for the newest one for better performance. You have a bit of a project going from a gas to a diesel engine. Most folks say you have to raise the seat an inch or so to get the diesel in. I have had some problems with my A4 but it is cheaper to rebuild it than repower. Richard

I believe that Catalina upgraded the rudder to a larger size to give the boat better control in later year models. I'd buy the upgrade (but don't know the cost either). If you are used to spending money, and have the prop shaft disconnected, you might also install the PSS dripless shaft seal. You won't have to mess with the stuffing box

New Rudder

Catalina certainly makes rudders, I am just now getting a third rudder for my boat. Just went through lots of thought as to whether to repair or replace - concluded replacement is best.
