Repower Question

I know this has been discussed a lot, but I have yet another question,
especially for those of you in Europe.

I have been working on Vega 2923 in Port Townsend Washington for a few
months now and she looks great with her new hull paint, mast and rigging,
etc. Her new sails will be finished in a week or two. But she still has the
old MD6B and still has the problem that the engine runs only at one speed, I
am guessing around 1500rpm. I am planning on repowering later this winter
and was reading an article about an electric power unit built by a company
in the U.K. ASMO marine. It looks like a pretty slick unit and I guess it
is in some use, but being in the Pacific Northwest I have barely heard of
it. Does anyone have any information about this unit? Here is their website:
http://www.asmomarine.com/2005/asmo_uk/01.shtml . The cost seems to be about
the same as a new diesel.

While I am at it, does anyone have any comments about the engine running at
only one speed? I have checked it out and am pretty sure there is a problem
with the injector pump, but is there is some easy fix I can do at little
expense until I repower this coming winter that would be great also. I can
pretty easily deal with the one speed by some shifting (I also have a huge
paddle), but it would be nice to have some throttle (I am also concerned
about runaway dieseling if it is a injector pump problem).

Thanks,

Chris Brown

Hi Chris

One cheap answer would be to seperate the propellor pitch and engine rpm
controls. If youhave just one speed of engine then by altering the pitch you
can control your speed in forward and reverse. This has been done by a few
Vega owners in the UK and Europe. Top rpm of your MD6B is about 2200

Chris, I believe you may have the same fuel injection pump problem I
had for a few months with my MD6B, the engine runs at the one speed
where the pump actually broke.

Where the throttle connects to pump is about a 2 inch long shaft
that extends into the pump and connects into a valve type thing
inside the pump head...anyway at the end of this 2 inch shaft on the
inside of pump is a pin that had broken off. You can tell if this is
your case ..as the throttle will just turn round and round (if you
disconnect the cables etc) because it's not connected into the head
on the inside (because of broken pin).

The fuel injection pros said this happened due to water in the fuel.
The only solution was to replace the pump (which fortunately a nice
fellow on this board helped me out with)

Now I have a new pump but can't start engine though as I don't
understand this calibrating bosch injection pump as described in the
MD6B manual, and I think the local marine mechanic does not
understand this either as he wants to take more of the engine apart
and explore after 4 hrs of research.

Hi Kevin

Make sure the engineer cracks open the 17mm bolt on the front of the pump
once it is fitted and turn the engine over until dielsel drips out of this
bolt/nut. Once diesel drips out then tighten, then check diesel squirts out
of the injector pipes. Full instructions are in the workshop manual which is
available on the net or on the VAGB CDROM.

The attached post says that the manual for the MD6B is available on
the net - I haven't been able to find it can anyone point me to it? I
am just about to buy a Vega - How do I get hold of the CD Rom referred
to in the post?

Also I am unable to open the zip file containing the plans for Walt
Shevitski's mast boot/tabernacle and crutch on the files section on
the Vega forum - can anyone advise on a programme which will open
this?

Sorry about the flurry of questions, but I'm keen to get a good
understanding of how the boat works before I sail her back from the
Medway to Scotland.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Regards, John

Hi John

When you jon the VAGB (UK Vega Club) there is a CDROM available with all the
technical notes, including MD6/7 Workshop Manual in PDF format.

Which Vega have you bought form The Medway?

If you need an application form etc then have a look at www.albinvega.co.uk

Off to the Southampton Boatshow for the day.

Hi John!

Here is a link to Volvo Penta manuals. Hope you´ll find what you were
looking for. And good luck to your trip back to Scotland.
