I have a 1984 Catalina 30 that needs repowering. The boat does not currently have an engine installed. I have access to a Universal m-30 diesel. Can I repower with this engine and not be required to make modifications to the hull engine bed or storage compartment? Will it fit the existing motor mounts? Will it fit in this boat? Has anyone used this motor set-up in a Catalina 30? Any help or advice that anyone has would be much appreciated.

I am not sure the M-30 will fit. I know the Universal M3-20B will fit in place of the old 1 cyl Yanmar. The newer C-30's had M-25's and M-25XP's..

I know the M25 series will fit

but not sure about the M30.

You have a few choices:

1. You have the boat and the engine. Do some measurements. The M30 dimensions are available at www.marinedieseldirect.com

2. Call Catalina and ask them.

3. Try the C30 Association: www.catalina30.com

4. Call Torresen (see item 1 above).

Sorry we don't have any more specific answers to your question, so far.:)

Hey guy,
I repowered my C30 a few years back. Depending on you year boat, You should have some options. On my 1980 boat, I repowered it with a westerbeke (formaly Universal) 3M20a. I wanted to use the 25XP but would have to cut the forward section as the motor was longer. Go online & download a few different models.. You will be able to get an idea of what will fit.
Important to look at the distance from motor mount to front & rear mount to shaft log. If you have mount holes in your stringers see if you can match the "footprint". Alot are standard spacing. If not you may need to have a transition plate made. Also take note on overall height from the center of shaft to top. Give me a shout if needed. Hope this helps..
