As part of the work I had done while I was in the boatyard last week, I replaced the 2 blade CDI feathering prop ( good prop, but they don't make it any more and it was getting a lot of wear and sloppiness in the blade action)with a Campbell-Sailor three blade prop. So far, I am really satisfied with the switch...at my normal cruising RPM of around 2450, the boat is .5 of a knot faster, and much much smoother ...almost no vibration....the only thing I have noticed that is different is the amount of reverse thrust...the feathering prop had enormous reverse thrust, and I guess I got used to it. As I brought the boat back to my home dock, the wind was about 16 knots crosswind, so I had to use a good bit of throttle and speed to make sure I got the boat into the proper attitude to snag the piling (I was singlehanding)...so I go charging into the slot, congratulate myself on my approach, and go into reverse to stop...don't slow down as much as I wanted, so I keep increaseing throttle until I get to around 3000 rpm...finally stopped, but not as fast as I was used to....barely kissed the dock box with the bow pulpit...lucky... The prop drives the boat at 7.5 knots wide open (makes 3000 rpm, so the pitch is right), hull speed is around 7.2 knots, so it seems very well matched for the boat. Clean bottom and new stuffing box and shaft alignment, so I guess this as good as it will get..still, for 15 hp max ( a 26 year old engine, so I doubt that number)...that is pretty good. Guess the Campbell-Sailor people know what they are doing... I haven't sailed under "normal" conditions, so I can't say if one would notice the increased drag of the fixed prop, although it didn't seem to be any different than the feathering prop in the 15-20 knot winds I was in the other day, but that is what you would expect. So far, I am glad I made the switch...

What Pitch / Diameter

Hi Jim. I have a 3 bladed Max-Prop that I transferred from my last boat to my C/H-33. I love that powerful referse the feathering props give. So what blade pitch and diameter did Cambell-Sailor set you up with? Max-Prop recommended the 13" prop with 12" (or 26 degrees) of pitch for me (same engine as you) this is the same setting they recommended for my Watkins 27 with the 12hp (max) Yanmar.
