Replacing wire halyards with rope?

Hi, My halyards are wire with rope tails and they are a bit the worse for wear! Is it acceptable to use all rope? It looks like an 8mm rope will fit the pulley block at the top of the mast. Many thanks.
ps what type of rope is best? I did a quick search and, as usual, the choice is immense!

Hi John

I replace all halyards and sheets with braid on braid pre-stretched polyester. Most are 10mm (Main, Genoa). Spinny and topping 8mm or even 6mm. Drop me an emaila s I make the sets up for the Vega at decent price including soft-eye splices where needed.Cheers

Check the sheaves for wear and burrs that could damage the new halyards.
This is common after years of use with wire. Also check that the sheave is
designed for rope. One designed for wire has a groove for the wire to fit
in. Some are combination sheaves with a groove for rope with a narrower one
for the wire in the middle.

Something like Sta Set will work well.

Where are you located?

Can only say I have replaced standard vega Halyards with 10mm Braid on Braid
over teh last 20 years, I must of helped re-rope 50 plus Vegas..... Never a
problem.
