Hi,
I want to replace the steering wheel with a tiller on a 281. Has anyone done that?
Thanks, Scott

I have never seen the geometry of the 281 steering. if its anything like the 323, it might be fairly easy. The 323 emergency tiller fits in a socket atop the rudder post. That said, an extension post could be fabricated and installed to which a tiller could be fitted with the use of a clamping ring.

Pedestal removal and steering quadrant should be fairly easy to remove, especially if there is a removable section of cockpit floorboard.

I suppose its a matter of personal preference, but why would you want to go back to a tiller? That would seem to require more real estate in the cockpit for swing room.

Take a look at the Beneteau parts website for your model. Depending on the year the wheel may have been an option (as in the case of my F345). If that's the case you may be able to purchase the parts direct from Beneteau or at the very least show the schematic to a fabricator.

Tiller is simple, less space taken when not in use, auto pilot cheaper. I don't spend much time steering anyway. I figured that I could use the emergency tiller as a model to make a permanent one.
Thanks for the information,
