Well, the title of the post says it all, except, I am a real novice in working on engines. I am hoping that someone in this forum can point me towards some good step by step directions and maybe a Youtube video or two.
Oh, I've purchased a water pump kit that should include everything I need. As far as the rest of the motor, I got it from my brother in law who is a master engine mechanic. He said he rebuilt it all except he did not get around to the water pump. He said it runs great but because of the water pump problem, it will overheat.
So, looking forward to my continuing education!

I have the same challenges with my evinrude 9.9. Here is the best video I have seen so far:
In case the link does not work you can search YouTube for Johnson 15 HP outboard water pump replacement.

Good luck. Let me know what you learn.

here's another one that may be a bit closer to what you have:

all similar engines will be a similar procedure however. I took my 6hp Johnson apart to check the impeller a couple weeks ago. the old one was in good shape actually, but I decided to get a new one anyway. when I arrived at the dealer with the old impeller he says "oh you have the small shaft model, I'll have to order that one. should have it tomorrow" that was over a week ago, still no impeller and we wanted to sail so I put it back together with the old one (20 minute job) and we sailed on. in other words, it's a very simple job ;) .
One thing to keep in mind is that you're dealing with aluminum/mag alloy which is soft. don't over-torque your bolts!!!!
