if it's like a O30 yes. Do you have wheel steering? dropping the rudder we did mine last year) is not that hard. greasy and hard to trwist your body into the back of the bilge is the hard part. if your pulling the shaft are going to replace the cutless bearing and install a dripless seal too? good luck!

I don't know what the prop shaft and the rudder setup looks like on a ODay 30 and I have tiller steering on the Oday 27, ..Still hope the rudder doesen't need to come off. Has any 27 owners pulled their shaft with out dropping the rudder ?

I had a 1976 O'day 27 and was able to remove the shaft without removing the rudder however, I had a loose strut that I was fixing at the time so that may have given me a little more wiggle room to get past the rudder. I also had a folding prop that may have helped as well.
Denise is right about the rudder not being a big deal to drop. I dropped mine just a couple of weeks ago on an O'day 35. Take her advice and replace the cutlass bearing while your at it.

What ever you do please do not try and "squeak" it by the rudder. Prop shafts bend very, very easily and truing one is labor intensive and expensive. If you bend one the cost of new is almost what it will cost to straighten one. I'm with Denise in that you should drop the rudder if you need to..

So very right on MS, agonizing over doing something that has to be done is sometimes more time consuming then doing the deed. I had help but in the end I really enjoyed? contorting myself to get the cables off the quadrant and finding out only one bolt keeps the rudder in the tube. Same thing with my fuel tank.. it was leaking..no mistake.. finally with one of my friends helping me they actually lifted out the old tank by just cutting the filler tube off the top. so the old tank was out and the new in place in less then 2 days and that was only like a total of 4 hrs it that. I don't think it even took an hour to drop the rudder!

When the boat comes out so will the cutless bearing. I've made a puller- pusher (tool) for that, worked great on my friends boat.
