Replacing the port lights

I've scanned the archives because I'm about to replace both leaky port lights. They were solid to the deck, and I broke both of them pulling 'em out, but taped them back together for new patterns. I've found a place to cut the Lexan for me, but before I replace 'em, I need to remove all the old black gasket material which is pretty well bonded to the gelcoat.

First, anyone have a suggestion for solvent or method that might make this go quicker than it looks like it might? I'm going to use a plastic knife, but that stuff's on there TIGHT, so some kind of solvent is called for. I tried adhesive cleaner, which softened the outer layer a millimeter or so, but not enough to separate the stuff from the fiberglass.

Second, any recommendations for gasket material? Do you use rope or preformed gasket (I hope) or liquid from a canister? I'd love to be able to lay a clean gasket, then lay the lexan on and tighten it down.

And last, what kind of torque should I used to screw the lights back down. Other forums say to tighten them lightly, then wait a day and torque them down. If I crack one while I'm replacing it (something I did with a car windshield back in the day), I'll jump overboard.

Thanks for all you folks, great advice...these forums are sometimes a lifesaver!
