Replacing the main hatch

Hello all, I have played around with replacing the main hatch on my H-22 since I purchased it last September. I finally got around to the research and thought this might be helpful. I called Hunter and they referred me to a Company called Pompanette in Florida. They are making replacements for the old hatches made by the Gray company. They are affiliated with Bomar. The Pompanette company will sell you a hatch directly but the price is pretty high. With the trim ring and screen about $300.00 plus shipping. I asked if they had any distributors and one they gave was West Marine. I looked for it at West nad the number for the replacement is part number 117897. The manufacturer model number is G966-1111. The hatch sold for $229.00 and they are offering a $20.00 discount for orders over $200.00 and free shipping. I recieved mine in about 3 days. I figure a new hatch, trim ring and screen for $209.00 isn't that bad. I opened the box and they have made several improvements over the old design. 1. The new hatch no longer has the screw down "dogs". Two handles now lock the hatch from the inside and allow you to lock the hatch in a vent position as well. 2. The arm that supports the hatch while it is open is a twist lock and looks much easier to operate and shouldn't be as prone to breaking as the old slides were. I haven't had a chance to install it yet but it looks like an 1-1.5 hour project with not alot of fuss. I will let you know how it goes. Just thought I would pass this on. Jim

Same Hatch

Jim, I used the same hatch to replace the forward hatch on my 25.5. Wasn't an "exact" replacement though. I had to grind out the corners with a rotary cutter to reshape the cutout for the hatch. You'll also have to fill any voids this opens up, and fill the old screw holes. It took me about 4hrs of work to install the hatch. Looks great and I'm very happy with it. Especially now the I don't have a wet V-Berth any longer. I didn't use the trim ring that was provided.

It's real close but........

Jim, you're probably gonna find out that although it's a real close match, the closest you're gonna find, that it's NOT a straight out swap. I thought the same thing when I got my new hatch, especially when I noticed that even all the screw mounting holes aligned perfectly. I ended up having to cut out about a 1/2" all the way around to make it fit. Good luck, Mark
