I just bougth my boat last August and noticed a smell whenever we'd open it up. Last fall I found the source, it was coming from the V berth where the holding tank is located. One thing I learned from these forums is that the hoses get permeated over time. The hose from the head to the tank was recently replaced but the others looked to be original (c. 1987). I removed the tank. There are two hosed from the bottom of the tank. One goes to the deck for pumpout the other was formerly an overboard pumpout and was capped by the previous owner -with a wood plug. Since both hoses exit the bottom of the tank, they will always have black water sitting in them and I suspect they are probably the problem. The dried up wooden plug can't help either. I removed the unused hose and installed a sch80 pvc plug and am now replacing the other hose to the deck. Now, here's the question.
Since there will always be sewage sitting in the bottom of that hose won't it get permeated again soon, even with good quality marine hose (trident 101)? I read somewhere that someone used black polyethylene hose- irrigation hose. It's cheaper and won't permeate, any thoughts? I considered PVC for the bottom section but its rigid and I may not be able to make the angles.
