My Hunter 37 Cutter has a worn cabin sole that needs to be replaced. Has anyone done this yet? I cant decide if it would be easier to replace the plywood with individual pieces to build the sole. Has anyone any suggestions or tips to help with the job?

Cabin Sole Material

Ray, call Marine Lumber Supply, Charleston, SC. They have both teak tongue and groove and holly t & G. Also have t & h plywood in three thicknesses up to 3/4". They can give you the in's and out's of either choice. 843-554-2425 Good luck with your project -- put a picture on this site when you are finished.

Think about PlasTeak

Think about a product like Plasteak. It is basically like the product that Hunter uses in the new boats. It will be the last time you need to worry about such a thing and you can spend a lot more time sailing.

New Sole

Ray.......... After living aboard Duet for almost 20 years, her sole is getting pretty shabby. I've also undertaken the replacement by purchasing the teak & holly plywood (nominally 1/4") cut in such a way as to do the whole salon with one panel. This stuff is $$$$$! Keep in mind we live on the boat, so the sole has to be fabricated and finished elsewhere, then installed as a finished product. After putting a good coat of varnish on the ply to protect it from splintering, I will make patterns for the individual pieces, making sure to line up the holly strips with those existing at the vanity and forepeak (which will only need to be varnished anew). The patterns will be reduced on all sides by 1/8" I will use a router with a 1/4" bearing-guided straight bit to cut out the pieces, following the cut-down patterns exactly. Then 1/8" teak strips will be epoxied to all edges to make up for the radius of the 1/4" router bit. After sanding and before many coats of satin varnish, the pieces will be checked for fit, and hopefully we'll have a new sole!!! I must admit I've had the ply for quite a while, and still haven't started, but I'm sure we'll get it done this summer......he heh. Good luck! Dave

problems

I have also considered replacing the t&h flooring as mine is delaminiting all over the place. my concern is the fact that it appears that the flooring was put in before the bulkheads were installed so the flooring goes UNDER the bulkheads. i guess i could cut them out using a dremmel tool and cut around the bulkheads and reinstall something and then put 1/4 round down to cover the edges...i am considering the vinyl stuff as i NEVER want to have to go thru the ordeal of refininshing the floor again and considering the price it is in line with the wood stuff.... feedback about the "under the bulkheads" problem is wanted cp

what about penetrating epoxy?

I have the same issue on my 37-C 1978. I was thinking about using Smith's penetrating epoxy, which changes the actual make-up of the wood. I used it when I replaced my ports, and saw first-hand how it can basically turn wood into a plastic-like material. I have a carpet, so the look doesn't bother me too much, but I would like to protect the wood from getting any softer. In terms of how much demolition would need to be done, don't forget under the sink, stove, water tanks, vanity sink, etc. I would love to hear from someone who actually replaced the sole. I suppose you could cut out a particular portion and scarf in fitted pieces, but replacing the entire sole seems like a monster job. Josh
