Replacing Standing Rigging

I purchased my 1986 C22 in Sept. of 2002 and it appeared to be very well maintained. I have no idea how long ago the stanidng rigging (stays etc.) were replaced or if they are the original equipment. While it appears (to me) to be in good shape (eg. no meat hooks or obvious kinks) I would like to know how one can tell when it needs replacing. Catalina Direct recommends replacing every 5 years. This seems a little extreme to me. Does anyone have any tips?

Standing rigging longevity

Hi Larry - There are a number of factors that determine the longevity of standing rigging. Climate and use are the ones that stand out to me. I suggest carefully inspecting the shrouds, on both ends and along the lengths. If you see no meathooks or obvious signs of severe corrosion, I think your rigging is probably fine. Make sure you examine the forestay and backstay as well. It's a matter of opinion, but I personally choose not to worry about a 5 or 10 year replacement recommendation, as every situation is different. Best, Trevor

Try 10-12 Years

As Trevor points out, it depends on how hard the boat is used, whether the shrouds are regularly maintained, etc. Given the cost of standing rigging replacement, 5 years seems too soon unles there is evidence of corrossion or failure. When I purchased my 85 Catalina 30 3 years ago, it had the original rig but there were several cracked fittings and I replaced the entire thing- probably should have been done at 10-12 years. I'd err on the side of replacing sooner rahter than later for peace of mind. Try Lanocote on the end swages -keeps water and corrosion out and may extend rigging life.

If it looks good . . .

Why replace it. The older the rigging, the more frequent the inspections. I have a 1982 with the original standing rigging, and all is in good shape. If you think there is a problem with your rigging, then consider replacing it. Regards, Ted

Thanks for the Tips!

Thanks for the advice. :) I think I can get a few more years out of the current rigging and keep an eye on it. BTW What is lanocote and where can it be obtained?

Lanocote

Lanocote is a natural lanolin compound and can be purchased at West Marine or Defender for about $8 for a jar that should last at least 5 years.
