I'm planning to replace the standing rigging on my '84 C22. I doubt its ever been replaced, but I can't be sure. I know Catalina Direct has the parts, but I'm curious about the level of difficulty of this job. I new to this sport and not quite sure what I may be getting into if I try this. Any thoughts?

If you can still adjust

your turnbuckles and there is no sign of significant wear on the stainless, why do it? But, if you must, it's fairly easy. Just get a couple of mates to help, and take your time.

significant wear

The forstay on the C22 has a slight kink in it but otherwise there doesn't seem to be too much wear that I can see. What will significant wear look like? I read that it is recommended to change the rigging every 12 years. Is that not typical for maintaining an older boat?

are you a gambler

The trouble with wear on the standing rigging on any boat is that you usually can't see it untill it is too late. Much of the wear happens in the inner regions of the wire where the stretching and rubbing goes on. You need to look at the kind of use the boat has had and how much strain has been put on the rigging. The job is really easy using the Catalina Direct replacements--just take off the old and put on the new. Of course this needs to be done in "dry dock". The question you need to ask yourself, sailior, is "am I feeling lucky". Well do you, sailor?

if it were a trailer sailor...

it would be pretty easy to replace that rigging..i would imagine you'd have to replace the rigging, one at a time. and if i werent sure about it.. i'd replace it..
