Replacing shift and throttle cables, H37C

My first post to HOW.... this looks like a great resource! Threaded stud at the end of our shifter cable broke recently, right at the point where it enters the clevis (at the shift lever end). Luckily there were just enough threads left on the stud that I could reattach the clevis, and this temporary "fix" is getting us around for now... on borrowed time! I'd like to replace both cables but would rather not remove them until I have the replacements on hand. Does anyone know the exact length of the cables? I measured, as best I could, with the cables in place. Also, would you recommend buying the cables from Edson (the boat has an Edson steering pedestal, and their catalog shows that they carry the parts), or are the ones available from West Marine (Morse/Teleflex) of better quality? The shifter has always been a little stiff, especially going into reverse (and my guess is this extra pulling force contributed to it breaking). thanks! Tom

Morse. . . .

seems to be the choice around this website Tom. While Edson's prices are high they do have quality products and service. When I ordered their catalog they included a couple of Xerox copies of our H37C Edson installation complete with part numbers. I think your measurement is probably accurate enough. Can you remove the cable at the tranny and shift by hand? This will tell you whether the stiffness is the cable, Edson lever, or tranny. Is your H37C a later model with the "door" to the engine room from the quarterberth? My 1979 did not have that access. Now it does. :)

Yes, thankfully it does have the access door from the quarterberth. I haven't tried shifting the transmission with the cable detached but I will do that. The throttle cable looks to be trickier, since there doesn't seem to be a convenient access door at the forward starboard side of the engine. I did notice some thin gaps in the insulation on that side that seemed to imply there might be an access portal from the galley storage area... but haven't investigated that yet (I will have to unload all the stuff from that cabinet and remove shelves). Thanks for the quick response!

Tom, To gain access to the injector pump and cables, (starboard side) remove the 3 cabinet drawers, unscrew the side wall (with drawer slides attached). I think there's 8 screws. You can sneak a peek through the hole you created. Good Luck. Just be sure and tighten the screws down when you put it back together or the drawers will stick. Larry Bliss - Horizon

Interesting... we don't have drawers there, just a cabinet door and several shelves inside. (The boat's had several owners over the years, though, so maybe somewhere along the line, someone decided they didn't like the drawers.) Regardless, I'll have to investigate removing that side panel... that sounds very hopeful.
