Replacing shelf-foot main

Our Catalina 27 (tall rig) has an old shelf-foot mainsail. It's time to replace it. I have been considering a full-batten main. The sail has two reef points and another set of "reef" points for the shelf. The boom has blocks for all three points but there is no rigging for the shelf reef points. Are there any special considerations for making this sail change? Are two battens OK for a full-batten design? Thanks for any advice. Geoffrey Jackson

Doyle semi Full Batten Main

I'm convinced the best current design is two full battens on top, two partials below, and a loose foot. We are very happy with the Doyle we bought two years ago. In medium winds, heel was reduced 5 degrees, and speed is up 1 to 1.5 knots. We have two reef points, and would add a third if we were going blue water cruising. David Lady Lillie '77 h27

Pineapple Sails of Oakland, CA has an informative article on the pros and cons of full batten mains (see related link). I had an older main on my C-30 retrofitted with 3 full battens and have been happy.
