Can anyone advise as to how we can replace the frayed roller furling line? We've been told that the drum will need to be opened...forestay removed?

Probably not.

  1. Get appropriate line, probably ~ 3/8" and strip the cover from the portion between the furler and the jammer. Stripped line fits better and grabs the drum better.
  2. Furl the sail and remove the sheets.
  3. Attach the line with a clove hitch if you cannot thread it through the original anchoring hole. Put a stopper knot at the tail just so it can't creap through.
  4. Wind at least one layer of line over the knot by spinning the forestay and sail. This will secure the knot and give better leverage.
  5. Reattach the sheets.
  6. Check for chafe points. Where did the original line rub? Perhaps something is not aligned properly. Sometimes this changes from one tack to the othre, due to forestay sag.

I've done this several times. On my furler it actually works better than the original hole.

I agree with 'Thinwater'. I just replaced my line a couple months ago....very smooth operation....just protect anything from falling into the water if at the slip..which I was. Also, the only thing I would add is make sure the line type has a strong cover as with the core removed, this is very important....I spoke with a fellow from WM who made sure I was getting good line w/a strong cover...removing the core makes for much easier reefing, etc. in higher winds.....Pat
