Can some one explain how to replace the Outhaul line?I am trying to pull another one through and I get so far and it stops.Evidently the Z Spar boom has a double purchase and I cant figure where my hold up is.Also, the boom is riveted together so it cant just be separated. Can someone explain how to replace it or explain what a double purchase is? Thanks P.S.This site is a great help for us "Newbies"

Double purchase

I could help you if the lines for the reef or main had come out, but the outhaul is a challenge. The double purchase means simply that there is a small set of block-and-tackle inside the spar to give you more oomph when you pull down on the outhaul, much the same principle as how the mainsheet blocks at thre traveler give you more purchase or leverage. You could try dismantling the boom, which is easy, and get a good look inside with a flashlight to see if you grab what's left of the outhaul and attach a line to that somehow.

Same problem

Tried to remove the outhaul on our H36 (Kenyon Marine)for cleaning. It appears one end of the outhaul is landed inside the forward end of the boom, runs through a couple sets of blocks for the purchase then back out the forward end of the boom through a sheave. A wire line connects to the aft end of the block and runs out the aft end of the boom around a sheave to the mainsail clew. Only way to get the outhaul off the boom is to take the boom off the mast and remove the forward boom fixture containing all the reefing/outhaul sheaves, etc. On our boom the fixture is held onto the boom with two screws on either side. I understand these were originally riveted; the previous owner drilled them out and tapped in SS screws. Will likely do this at end of this season. Mike s/v Charisma 1982 H36
