replacing old with new

Peggy, I want to thank you on behalf of lots of people here on the net for your assistance on sanitation issues, Mine is a simple question (I think). I currently have a Jabsco Manual head on board (I don't readily have the model number) but it's small and it has a flip lever for emptying and filling. I want to replace it with a Tecma or Vacuflush and I want to do it with the minimum of modification. Given the distance from the waste line from the wall, does either one of those kind of fit in place? I realize this question may be too general, but I don't have exact measurements with me. Another troubling thing about the Jabsco was the tiny seat....not much like home. My wife is insisting it be replaced. Thanks again & have a Happy New Year Ray

I need more info

What size is your boat? How long is the run from your toilet to your tank? How much 12v power resources do you have? I'm not sure what you mean by "distance from the waste line into the wall." When switching from manual to electric, wiring is the most critical issue. All electric toilets should be on their own separate dedicated circuit, shared by nothing else--not even cabin linghts--that can pull power away from the toilet if its on while the toilet is in use...which most likely will mean running a new circuit and adding a breaker for it. The correct wire size for the distance from the battery is also critical. So this part of the job should prob'ly be done by a qualified marine electrician. Quite a bit of re-plumbing will be necessary to install a VacuFlush...less for the Tecma, but there are other issues: Weight...The Tecma is a one-piece all china bowl and pedestal (like household toilets) that weighs 50 lbs or more. Below deck Space for the VacuFlush vacuum generator or separate vacuum tank and vacuum pump can be another issue...they take up quite a bit of room. And the Tecma needs quite a bit of power...more than is practical on most sailboats. So neither may be the best choice for your boat. However, there are other electric toilets that should make your admiral happy. In fact, she'd prob'ly even be a lot happier with any other manual toilet. Tell me what I need to know to give you good advice and we'llgo from there.

If the boat in the photo is your boat...

Go with a Tecma. It's so superior to any other electric toilet that other mfrs--including SeaLand--have tried to clone it. Take a good look at the new "Easy Fit" version...should be the ideal replacement, and costs a lot less than a VacuFlush: http://www.yachtproductsintl.com/category.aspx?categoryID=45
