I tried replacing engine oil on our 272 diesel, wow what a headache, I must be doing something wrong...drained 1 QT out, gave-up and just swapped filter and added fresh oil...any ideas on a way to do it?

I was lucky, a friend at our club gave me a pump which hooks up to the drain plug right at the front left corner of the engine compartment....this is a black hose with a brass cap on it. Take the brass cap to a hardware store and get another, longer black hose with a male end (brass) which you will then screw on to the brass cap on the oil pan hose....then you will hook this new longer black hose & brass nipple up to any kind of pump (either manual or electric), and pump the oil out directly from the oil pan instead of trying to suck it from the pan going thru the dipstick hole by the filter....After removing all the oil (it doesn't take long) you can unscrew the old filter and using a plastic bag, drop the old filter into the plastic trash bag....a no-mess deal if you are carefull...(also wipe down everything w/paper towel)...now you have all the oil out of the pan...be sure and use some engine oil
to lubricate the new filter gasket you are going to install so it will not leak...You'll are now
done with the hard part....just be sure to clean up everything....oh yes, be sure to run
the engine for maybe 4 minutes to heat up the old oil before removing....You will not believe how clean your oil will be when you check the dipstick....now you have really clean oil....I use westerbeke filters but am probably a fool...I just know they fit and don't want to be bothered....I do this two times a year.....whether I need to or not...
Good Luck and let me know if something doesn't make sense. Patrick

I used an oil extractor pump for small engines (~$50) to drain the oil. Removed dip stick, slid tube from extractor in and after a few pumps the oil drained into the pump's reservoir. Then replaced the filter, refilled the oil, started engine and checked for leaks and oil level. I've used both westerbeke and fram oil filters.

If you are going to change the fuel filters on the engine block it's a good time to change them when the oil filter is off since the fuel filter canister can't be removed with the oil filter on.

Pat - does your 10-2 have a metal plate at front left side of engine (looking at engine from cabin) that has a hole in it? Believe me, I am no engine expert, no Westerbeke expert or diesel expert. But my '87 272 had this on it when I bought it. The rubber hose from the oil pan fits through this hole to keep it in an upright position. Metal cap ensures oil doesn't come out, and will not fit through hole to allow hose to fall down. I'll go to boat tomorrow to get a picture. Still haven't finished my water/fuel filter installation - forgot a part when I went to boat Sunday and didn't have time to retrace my steps, nor the $$ to go buy second set of everything. MAYBE I'll be ready for a sail this weekend.

And just when Hurricane season starts - winds pedicted tomorrow are 15-25 due to tropical depression that now looks like it wil go into Big Bend area East of Tallahassee...

I know exactly what you are referring to. My oil hose connects to a metal bar and the brass nipple screws through it holding the oil hose upright. Does not sound like your engine is that unusual. I just need to get a pump, otherwise, it is just too painful!

thanks! i will try to get an oil pump and try this again. Now that i have put a new filter on with 3qrts of old oil, should i replace the filter again, or just drain all of the oil and just replace it with fresh?

Yes, that the hose w/brass fitting is attached to with the cap, etc....a really slick little deal....I can't believe how clean the oil is when taking advantage of this little deal....Pat

Steps, depending on how long ago you changed the filter, I would not replace it if less than a month or two old.....you are going to be running really clean oil thru it...I actually add a bit of "marvel mystery oil" to the regular oil I use....maybe the equivalent of 1/2 quart..I'm not sure why except my volvo dealer said it is good for volvo engines too...maybe not be a good thing....another discussion topic...Pat
