Replacing my outboard

I currently have a 9.9 Evinrude electric start outboard on my 1979 O'Day 23. This outboard was made in 1981, and is showing its age. I just bought this package last year, so this is my first season with this equipment. I have already had to sink over $200 into fixing the throttle and electric start this year, and I can see this will only get worse as time goes on. I am looking for your advice on a new outboard. How much horsepower is appropriate? Two or four stroke? Does anybody particularly like or dislike their engine mount? My wife really likes the electric start (who am I kidding, so do I), so I think I will be looking for an engine (long shaft, to be sure) with that feature. I would appreciate the thoughts of anyone with experience, good or bad, with one of the new models available.

You're looking at more money but it really is the way to go. They're (mine is anyway) quieter, less pollution, don't have to mix oil into the gas and LOVELOVELOVE the electric start! I also have cockpit controls which are a MUST! As far as horsepower, I'd probably go for a 9.9. It'll push you along nicely & will be helpful if things get nasty at all. LaDonna

Tohatsu 8hp is a good value . . .

I recently researched this same issue and purchased a Tohatsu 8hp, 2-cycle, long shaft, electric start, for about $1,300. It has been reliable and powers my Hunter 235 at maximum hull speed. The 4-stroke Honda is the gold standard . . .but costs considerably more.
