The muffler on my boat is corroded and leaking. I'd be grateful to anyone who can tell me if there are any tricks to replacing a muffler and if any brand or type is best.

there are a couple available in the $100 range

from WEst marine. I have a 78 cherubini 27 and mine had a pinhole leak. I removed it and repaired it with west system epoxy. I sanded out the rusty area and had not problem since the repair two years ago. I will admit, it was not easy to remove and replace. I ended up hanging into the cavity under the seat.

Muffler and hoses

I would not recommend that you repair a muffler. It can be dangerous and will eventually leak again. You can buy a fiberglass inline muffler that will fit your hose diameter. Call Hunter for their advice on size and manufacturers. I think that it is easier to remove and replace all of the exhaust hoses along with the muffler at the same time. The hoses may be same age as your boat and won't easily come off the old muffler or the engine mixing elbow. You can detach the aft end of the exhaust hose from the thru hull and pull the entire exhaust system forward from under the cockpit. That way you can inspect, measure and replace the hoses, easily install the clamps and stop worrying.
