I am replacing the mixing elbow on my yanmar 2GM20F. I have read a lot of good posts here on this subject.

Any last minute advice on this subject?

You may want to purchase the manifold and the elbow assembly. Being that yours is over 20 years old it is going to be a SOB to take it apart.

Also get some gasket glue. This way you can stick the gasket to the engine or manifold. It is very difficult to get the bolts started unless you have studs in the motor (some do).

Steve is right that it is going to be extremely hard to take the elbow and the manifold attachment off from one another after 20 years. If you take it to a shop they might be able to by heating it up and using long cheater bars. If you can then you only need to get the elbow and the nipple and a gasket. 1st pic shows you the elbow, nipple and manifold attachment. 2nd shows you the end of the manifold where it attaches. There are 2 long and 2 short bolts and because you will be working blind when re-installing, follow Steve's advice on using gasket glue ! The toughest part of the job is getting the exhaust hose off. I find it easier to take it off the muffler and removing it off the elbow once out of the engine box ! Good luck.

Oh ya! I almost forgot. You need to use something on the manifold bolts when you replace them. I use never sieze.

I also had a hell of a time trying to remove the exhaust hose. I used a screw driver to push in around the top of the hose. I also used some WD40 to help lube it.

Maybe you already know this, but the part that threads into the mixing elbow is a left hand thread. The part that threads into the manifold piece is standard right hand thread.

In my case after the short coupling corroded through, I had to remove the piece from the manifold side with a small chisel. I tapped with a hammer around and around until it collapsed into itself and could be pulled out with a pair of pliers. With all the exposure to heat it is well annealed and therefore rather soft (ductile). Since we were in the middle of leading a Club cruise on last year's Forth of July weekend when this happened, the proper replacement parts were not available, so a quick fix solution was taken, which worked quite well. I still have that part for an emergency, but did replace the elbow and coupling when we returned.

I also use anti-sieze on the bolts before threading them back into the engine block. I have heard stories of them being stuck so badly that the heads sheared off when trying to remove them. Imagine trying to drill out the remaining piece of bolt in that situation.

And here it is the Fourth of July once again and we are leading the cruise from San Francisco to Monterey starting Saturday. This time, we should not have any issues (at least with the manifold).

You May Want to Consider ................................

............................ robbing a bank  before you head off to purchase the mixing elbow.

$382.35 the last time I replaced mine.

For removal of the exhaust hose, try using a hair dryer for about 1/2 hour (mount the dryer up against the hose) and it should come apart. I always coat the inside of the hose with parting compound before re-assembling. Makes it easier to dis-assemble but make sure your two (2) hose clamps are good and tight. The small raised ring on the end of the elbow ensures it will not slip apart from the hose.

Not an impossible job and I find a lot of swearing seems to help :cussing: .
