Replacing metal tank with plastic

I am replacing the metal holding tank on my P42 and am considering having one made out of ½” polyethylene to fit in the available space. Has anyone had a custom tank built? Any comments would be appreciated.

1/2" is overkill unless the tank is at least

60 gallons. 3/8" up to about 40 gallons is quite adequate...then the tank walls should gradually increase in thickness with size as necessary to support the weight of the waste in it. And I don't think you need to spend the money to have a custom tank made... Ronco Plastics makes TOP quality, thick-walled (at least 3/8") roto-molded tanks, and have more than 400 shapes and sizes--over 100 of which are non-rectangular--to choose from..and for a VERY reasonable price. I'd bet they have one that will fit your space. And you can spec your own fittings sizes and locations, to be installed by them when the tank is made. Their catalog is on their website at: http://www.ronco-plastics.com They're great people to work with, and a tank from them will cost you about 1/4 of what it would cost to have a custom welded tank made.

Ronco

Peggie thank you for your incredibly prompt response. I have emailed and faxed Ronco, as I could not find my size tank in their catalogue. No response as yet. The cost of custom making a tank would be $500 for 3/8” and an extra $50.00 for ½”. The main question is, do the welded tanks last as long as the moulded ones? Again thanks for your advice.

Welded tanks are ok...IF

The welds aren't sloppy. But you have to realize that seams are never as strong as seamless construction. In the event of a clogged vent, there's more potential for a seam to let go than for a seamless tank to crack. And repairing it is out the question, 'cuz I don't know of any shop that will work on a used holding tank. If Ronco doesn't have a tank that will fit the space your existing tank is in, there's no law requiring you to put a new tank in the same place. In fact, it's highly likely there are at least two other locations that would be better than where boat builders seem to want to put holding tanks. So think "out of the box" a bit. Btw...is the price quoted for a custom tank in USD or CAD?

Peggie Hall is really a corporation

with a staff of at least 20 to 30 people. How else can she answer a question faster than the person in the next office replies to my internal email. I think in USD when pricing for the boat.

plastic holding tank

The closest that I found in Ronco's catalog was #B148 on page 17 of their catalog. I'ts only 21 gallons as opposed to the original 30 gal tank but it might fit, especially if you don't put much foam underneath.

Why use ANY foam?

It's not needed...in fact, foaming in a tank causes more problems than it solves. Make sure the bottom is supported, and strap it down if you you think anything more is needed.

Derek, Thank you for the remark about Peggy!

She is a jewel and worth so much more. And Peggy, thanks to the Saran Wrap tip and it's resulting hose replacement, we now can sleep in the cabin instead of on deck. Ray sv Speedy
