As we were waiting at Vancouver Int. for my friends to arrive for the start
of a two week vacation aboard Halfmoon we heard the report of BC Ferries
going aground at Sewells Marina and taking out the entire east dock. My
slip is at the EAST end of the east dock right next to the BC Ferries dock
. In fact it is the LAST slip in the Marina, RIGHT NEXT to BC ferries. A
call to Sewell's didn't give us much hope when we were told that our dock
"was in the middle of it" and "several boats were crushed and rolled under
the Ferry". The area was cordoned off so we went home. Another call to
Sewell's "highly possible your boat is gone". This on the first day of
vacation... this after all the work and $$$ all winter? Thanks to the news
chopper and a "live reort" I spotted Halfmoon intact. I dodged the bullet
(Ferry) by 4 slips.
Last report was: no injuries on board the Ferry or ashore. The captain lost
power as he was aproaching Horseshoe Bay and did his best to go aground
rather than impact the dock with 1000 people on board.
My vacation is delayed by one day. We celebrate not being anywhere the dock
when this happened. We should have been, that was the plan. We had planned
on being at the boat by 9:30 this morning, fuel up and on our way, that
would have put me in the middle of this. The ferry struck the marina at 10:00
My friends flight was cancelled at the last minute last night with
mechanical problems. He arrived at 10:30 this a.m. 30 minutes after the
mishap.
Yes, I am thankful, it's nice still having a boat and being alive to enjoy it.|Garry|
