Hey folks, I had a nice sail in the 170 yesterday but noticed that the new main halyard I just installed is not up to the task. I purchased 50 feet of the 1/4" Marlow Ropes super Pre-stretch line in blue, as my topping lift is plenty stiff and is basically the same line, only white. Well, the 1/4" "Pre-stretch" exhibited about 2 FEET of play when I really tightened down on it while raising the main (not to mention while using the trailer winch attached to the halyard d-schackle to tension the forestay). So the question is: (for those of you who've had to replace your halyards-- my boat's a '99) What lines have you other 170 sailors had success with for this purpose? I've always liked New England Ropes' Sta-Set for other jobs, but am not sure if it would travel freely over the masthead tackle/pulleys. Thanks for your ideas, Mike G.

Jelousy is a horrible sin

and here it is Lent! I should not covet your location, but my boat is under a tarp and a brief spell of almost 50, the high temps for the next two weeks are not expected to get out of the low 30's!! And I thought Spring started in March!! I have no wisdom about your lines. Just thought you should know that I covet, I covet, I covet. john

Me Too

I am in northern Il. and our temp was 50 on Sunday and I just could not stand it any longer so I uncovered my 2003 170, sat in her and smoked a good cigar. This week the temps are in the 20-30 degree range. Man....do I want to live where I can sail year round.

A cigar in the 170

George, Nice call on having a good cigar in the 170. My uncle-in-law and I always imbibe in one when we see one another. Good times! Covetousness goes both ways! You guys up north have more reliable breezes in the summer than we do in Florida summers (so I get my reliable winds fix in during the winter-- get it)?! Always ALWAYS bring the kicker motor with you on an FL summer day-- never know when the wind will poop out! At least my parents' lake house in MN get great breezes during August when I visit. The Laser sees plenty of action! 'Til spring, keep the faith and down with Punxitauny Phil! Mike G.

Florida in the Summer

Aaaaaah yes, My wife and I went to Florida in the summer when we were young and stupid (my in-laws moved down there along with everyone else's in-laws when they retired). The three things that I remember about the trip: There is not enough DEET in the world to get me to hike in the everglades in July again. My in-laws would not leave the house until after sundown. Every day there was at least one really heavy downpour that seemed to come out of nowhere, last about ten minutes and then dissapear completely (not a cloud in the sky). All three of those things make me think Ann Arbor in a sailboat in July is better than Alachua in a sailboat in July. Forgive me if I am still just a little green for the next couple weeks though. John

Summer breezes

John, You're right about our afternoon storms. And the irony is, these storms come at the time of day (late afternoon) when Florida summer breezes have piped up to their maximum. What are you gonna do? Also, total shifts in wind direction are not uncommon on our lake (marked by 30 minutes of dead calm while the thermals re-align themselves)--- in all the years I've sailed the Laser and Sunfish in northern Minnesota summers, the wind has stayed more steady per dium than on a FL summer day. Mike
