The outer braid on my kick-up rudder pennant finally wore through and there isn't enough meat left on the inner braid for the cleat to get a good bite. I got some new line, but I can't figure out how to replace the old one without unbolting the rudder blade and taking it completely out of the housing. Is this really the only way?? Thanks in advance. That's what I did...

Peter, Unfortunately, removing the rudder blade from the housing is the only way I could find to replace the line when mine wore through. Fortunately, it's not as difficult as it looks- It's a pretty straight-forward operation once the rudder is off the transom. There is a small pad-eye attached to the rudder inside the rudder housing, and the kick-up line is tied to that. I had to cut the old line off (much salt water on the knot made untying it impossible), tie the new line on and feed it through the turning block, and then re-assemble the rudder. Not a big operation, it took me about half an hour for me to complete. Good luck... --Jon Bastien H23 '2 Sheets to the Wind'

Mind the two large nylon washers

When you remove the rudder pivot bolt, there are two nylon washers about 4 inches in diameter that fit between the rudder and the rudder housing. Make sure they get put back or the rudder will not swimg freely. They are spacer washers for keeping the rudder from binding. Other than that I found it quite easy. I didn't need to replace the line or anything, I just wanted to inspect everything.

It takes two ...

The same thing happened to my H23 about 18 months ago. We were able to replace it by having 1 person in the water and the other in the cockpit. Being July here in Texas we flipped a coin to see who was going to stay in the cockpit. I lost. We just worked the line through and then knotted it off. It took all of about 5 minutes. Good Luck!
