I am replacing my swing keel winch, and everything that goes with it. (Catalina 22 , 1970 #164). Everything went well, except the lock down handle for the keel. At first, I thought it was seized, then I was able to turn it a bit. I've soaked it with wd-40, and need the side of a hammer to make it move. Any suggestions on how to break it loose?? Space is really tight. Thanks

PB Blaster

you can try PB Blaster its light years ahead of most everything else.. THen you'll face the decision I am right now, since it couldn't be a worse design and not that's NOT going to keep the keel down. Most everyone I know has removed the strap and glassed up the hole making the boat more water tight.. mine will be glassed up in a week or two as well, after a week of putting up with it leaking, its got to go!

up or down

I chose to use the lockdown bolt. Mine leaks about 1/2 cup a week My q? Is it wise to leave the keel down or up when docked Currently its down and locked Im on a inland lake so tides are not an issue

Bolt is out

The bolt finally came out, with a lot of sweat, a hammer, and vice grips. I probably think the boat was sitting for years, and the pin was lodged against the keel. Thanks for your suggestions. Howard

leave the keel down

with the keel down, there is no tension on the keel cable. If the keel was up, and the cable failed, the keel wuold swing down and possibly damage the trunk, resulting in your boat sitting on the bottom of your slip when you return to sail it.
