I have just purchased a 84 Cat 22 and will be picking it up next month. I have been reading with great interest about the keel cable replacements. How hard is it to replace this cable, and can it be done from the water or on the trailer? My brother is a scubba diver, if that may help. Looking forward to all replys Dale

It's Easy

Replacing the keel cable is easy. The best way to do it, in my opinion, is on the trailer. That way you don't risk knocking a fitting loose while the boat is in the water. All you need is a friend and a couple of hand tools. It took me maybe twenty or thirty minutes to do mine, and we took a couple of breaks. Also, while your down there, go ahead and check the turning ball and keel hangers just to see what kind of shape they are in.

Zach, Can I replace the ball etc. all from the inside of the boat while it is on the trailer? I would think you would have to remove the cable from the winch drum, in order to get the hose assbly off. Do you have to do this in order to " see " the condition of the rest of the parts? Do I have to jack up the boat to do this? Dale

hose

I'd advise before you order the cable to make sure the turning ball is ok, I would also advise you to change the hose and clamps if its not been changed in a few years. Its cheap and well worth the peace of mind in knowing its not going to fail. Once the hose is off you will see the pin that holds the ball, a bent coat hanger will let you hold the ball and retrieve it. Otherwise it will fall out the bottom when you remove the pin. All this can be done on the trailer. You may or may not have to raise the boat, if you can see the pin and cotter pin on the keel you will not have to raise the boat.
