Hi there.. this is my first post on here! I recently bought my first boat - a Catalina 27 tall rig. I am going through all the lines, cleaning and in some cases replacing them. The most spent line of all is the outhaul, and I have no idea how to replace it, as it runs internally in the boom. Does anybody have insight or resources to help me figure it out? many thanks..

Not too tough

Most any line that runs inside - whether it be a boom, a mast, or even a wire inside a conduit - can be relatively easily replaced by using the removal of an existing line to pull a "messenger" line through whatever you need the line to run within. Get some strong yet light line, and attach it - either via stitching it to the existing line, tieing a knot, or even using some duct tape wrapped tight. Then pull the existing line out of the chamber, and pull the "messenger" line into the chamber. Once you've pulled the messenger completely through the chamber, pull a bunch more through, and then use it to pull the desired new line back through the chamber - and Voila! Line replaced! The various methods of attaching the line that I mention above might vary depending upon how long you have to pull the line (up the mast vs. through the boom), how heavy the line is, does it have to make a turn (such as at the top of the mast), etc. Leaving a messenger line in place (if you have room) even after you've run your desired line can have benefits in the future - in case you need break a line or otherwise need to run something in there and don't have an existing line to help out. If you don't have an existing line to attach a messenger to, here's a trick I've heard of: Get a lite women's stocking - like a "footie", tie a very light line - such as fishing line to it, and then put it in one end of the chamber that you want the line to run inside. Get a shopvac and do your best to attach it to the other end of the chamber. Turn it on and here comes the "footie"! Attach whaterever line you ultimately want run through the chamber to your fishing line, and pull it through. Neat little trick, and you get to say "footie". Good Luck! Bicycle chain

I have heard others speak of using a thin bicycle attached to a thin messenger line and drop in dwon from the top of the mast. It sounds like it could be tricky getting it to the opening at the lower part of the mast but have heard it is a viable method.
