Recently bought a 83 that was left on stands for a few years...a small leak at the foot of the mast ruined some of the flooring and roof. when I dismantled the molding, found that the fiberglass extends a few inches down the wood I need to replace. Saw through and re-glass? Or is there an easier sealant to use? Any help or advice would be appreciated.

Paul

The glass is structural. It is the fiberglass tabbing to the hull/deck. To do it properly you must replace the bulkhead. It's a goner. You must cut through the tabbing (dremel or similar would work, but be sure to protect your lungs), replace and then reglass with heavy biaxial roving.

The time has come to buy a 4 1/2 inch right angle grinder with a sanding attachment. Dremel tools aren't going to be up to the job. Save the piece you take out as a pattern and follow the advise of BobM. Definitely protect your health. Buy a tyvek suit, spray hood, goggles, dust mask(the best you can find), Change clothes before you go into the house. Read several books.

Paul;
Go to my reply on this subject on page 9 [of these archives] from 2006.At one time I had an article posted on the Seidelmann Owners main page, but over time it was (I believe??) removed to make room for other material. The answers you have rec'd thus far are by & large correct. The tools of choice are many...but I might add a good fan to exhaust the grinding dust will help make life a bit easier.By all means you will need protective clothing with strong emphisis on eye and lung protection. It is a very wise idea to remove any personal gear/ dishes/ & the like and for certain any clothing less the evil grinding dust find it's way into your jockey shorts....a most unpleasant event I will assure you!
I can mail you the complete bulkhead replacement info if you wish.

Did you look under your floor to see if the struts are affected by the mold? Cause mine were... I am going thru a complete refurbish of my seidelmann 25s right now.

Here's some pics that I took before and during the reparations... I know there's few air pockets in the fiber glass job :redface:...I have to sand and redo epoxy...

But Anyways you can see on the picture that I have the same problem than you. I don't want to replace the whole bulkhead, so I will trim the rotten part, an glue a new piece of teck. Then hide the reparation with a base board.

Ross have you tried the Multi-master tool? Couldn't afford the tv version but the Dremmel version is amazing. Haven't used it on fiberglass yet but I'm sure it will cut like butter with a lot less dust.

I have the Dremel version. It works great on fiberglass but dremel doesn't seem to promote its use for serious metal cutting.

Hi all!

So here I am - just signed up, bought a Seidelmann 25 on Saturday, and knew I had to redo the interior.
Looking at your pics, I now know that this is exactly what I will have to do.
Can you give me some info on where to start?
I'm sure that I have to gut her, and since I have to do that, I would like to make some changes to the layout.
Any info would be appreciated.
Thank you so much...
:) Ernst
