Replacing Head Pump Hunter 356

Good morning. This is our first boat and we've never sailed before. 10 weeks in and we are learning new things everyday. Really enjoying every minute. One thing we've learned is with the "thrills" comes the "spills." So... need to replace the Jayco head pump. Have a new pump already. Is there anything I should consider before starting? Does the holding tank need to be empty to avoid sewage overflow? Any tips will be appreciated. Thanks and glad to be aboard.

What Head

What head are you installing and should not need to empty the holding but flush out the head with new fresh water so all nice clean water is left in your hoses
and than maybe empty holding tank.

If your joker valve is in good shape, very little - if any. Even if you remove joker, maybe not so much. Depends on the configuration of your hoses, pressure in tank, etc.

Try

Try flush in dry mode to get as much liquid as possible out
of hoses and have changed heads and very little liquid was in hoses.
What model head are you installing, hope it's a Raritan.

It's good to flush clean water through first but very little should leak out.
HOWEVER, you really should return the jabsco pump - it's a piece of crap. Go onto the chandlery here and get the Raritan conversion kit which uses your jabsco bowl and replaces the base and pump with the far superior Raritan unit. easy conversion and works far better.
When Peggy first talked Raritan into making the kit (PHII/PHC LBAs -you want the PHC version), I was one of the first converts and it's run flawlessly for years. The jabsco pump is flimsy plastic that cracks all the time and costs $$$ compared to the conversion cost

Replace the hose to the bowl also. My "piece of crap" is in it's 9th year, so ignore those who like only what THEY have.

Ron,
I had 2 jabscos; the plastic valve parts break and the pump mounting flanges crack - it's not just me, it's common. The final blow for the jabsco came when the cost for the pump replacement was $75 and a whole replacement head was $90.
Production boat builders usually don't buy the best head; they go for price

Do you have the exact model number for raritan phc conversion kit for jabsco?
Is it a case of just changing the base and pump assembly only? Jabsco bowl to be reuse?

The part number is PHC LBA. The online store right here at sbo.com has it for the best price...here's the link:

Raritan LBA Upgrade for almost any toilet

And I just noticed that the description of the upgrade to PHC is a bit confusiing. Both the PH II (full size) and the PHC (compact size) use the same pump. The only difference is, the upgrade for the PHC is a PH II pump on a compact base, and with a shorter handle.

The jabsco is held in the boat by a couple of lag bolts. remove the head to a place where you can work -covered in plastic. unbolt the bowl, scrap the rest. bolt the bowl onto the Raritan base, reinstall in the head, connect hoses. it's that simple. the lag bolt pattern is a little different, so you do have to drill a couple of new holes in the mounting platform

Peggie,

The PHII LBA is described as being 15 3/8" wide. How wide is the smaller PHC LBA? I can't seem to find its dimensions anywhere, and I'd like to use one to replace the WC Headmate in our Pearson 323 which has very limited width available in the head area.

Had to call Raritan to get it 'cuz you're right...it's not published anywhere, only the PHII dimensions are.

Base is 13.75" wide

Total width of compete toilet measured across the top of the smaller "marine" size bowl from outside edge of bowl to outside edge of pump is 17.25."

Thanks for the quick reply Peggie!

So, given that the PHII LBA base is 15 3/8", the PHC LBA's width of 13 3/4" should be 1 5/8" smaller.
Yet, the overall width of the PHII (with bowl) is given as 17 3/4", and if the overall width of the PHC is 17 1/4", this is only 1/2" smaller! That's not much. Something's not adding up...

And just to add further confusion, I finally came across this diagram for the PHC, which agrees with your 17 1/4" dimension overall, but has the base width as 14".

Nope...18.25" See the first drawing on page 4 of the PHII owners manual here:

You really want to quibble over a 1/4"? :)

Now...measure the base and overall widths of your headmate to see how close they are to the PHC. I'm 99% certain that you'll find the PHC will fit.
