Replacing halyards

I am in the process of replacing my main and jib halyards and can not tell if they are 5/16 or 3/8. The boat is a 1981 25' Mac and I am going to run the halyards back to the cockpit while I am at it. I bought the boat last year and I am going to replace them with 3/8 unless someone tells me the blocks (if that is the right term) at the top of the mast will not handle 3/8. I took a piece of the line to where I buy some of my accessories and they could not tell either. I am not planning on taking the mast dowm to replace them otherwise I could just check to see if it binds. Thanks for any comments you may have.

Norman, where do you sail your boat? I've been to Fiddletown many years ago,and can't remember any lakes close by.I picked up a 21ft. Mac last year. This is my second year and I,am hoping for things to start coming together better in windy afternoons. If you happen to know David and Barbara Headly, say hi for me.I have'nt seen them in 20 yrs.Happy sailing. Jim

Fiddletown

Wow, somebodys actually heard of Fiddletown. Thats rare. The closest lake to us is Lake Camanche about 30 miles to the SW. We also sail on the Delta (50 miles)and Tahoe (75), and the occasional trip to SF Bay. We just got a new 26X in Nov. Still have our Mac25 that is for sale. Don't know the Headly's. But although the town itself is small, it is very spread out. They could live 5 miles from town and still have a Fiddletown address. We are about 3 miles east. Happy sailing to you too sir! Norm.
